sokapro-EFL Cup: Manchester United vs Charlton Athletic. Can the League One team shock the EPL giants?

A place in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup is at stake when Manchester United welcome League One outfit Charlton Athletic to Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Manchester United advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup after they defeated Everton 3-1 on Friday night, while Charlton were successful over Lincoln City 2-1 in the third round last time out. Conor Coady, the center-back for Everton, experienced all the emotions on Friday night as Man United overcame a small scare to defeat Everton and advance to the FA Cup fourth round. Coady went from hero to zero in the span of an hour. Antony's quickfire opener preceded a howler from David de Gea, allowing Coady to level the scores with just 14 minutes on the clock, but the England international turned into his own net after the restart prior to Marcus Rashford's penalty deep into added time. Manchester United is a five-time EFL Cup champion who most recently advanced to the semifinals in 2017 but lost to Manchester City in back-to-back semi-finals in 2020 and 2021. Their last two quarter-final exits came against teams from lower divisions, so they are trading on dangerous grounds.

The Erik ten Hag revolution is gathering pace as Man United enters the game on Tuesday looking to extend their winning streak to six games across all competitions. Additionally, all eight of their most recent games at Old Trafford have finished in victories with 21 goals in tow. Having suffered a blow to their festive celebrations after an early FA Cup exit at the hands of Stockport County, Charlton instead continued their quest for an unlikely playoff place in the League One standings against Lincoln on Saturday and were rewarded for their first-half attacking guile. In fact, Charlton has never advanced past the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup in their 118-year history and only had a chance to do so once, in the 2006-2007 season, which ended in disappointment as Wycombe Wanderers won 1-0 in the quarters. Therefore, tonight's match presents a second chance to yet again make history.

Queens Park Rangers, Walsall, Stevenage, and Brighton & Hove Albion have all fallen to Charlton's intelligence in the 2022-23 EFL Cup campaign but only in the fixture against Walsall was where they did not need a penalty shoot-out to progress to the next stage. It is also worth noting that they have lost all of their last meetings against Manchester United but football as beautiful as it is remains to be a game full of many surprises and we are yet to find out if there is one in store for us tonight.
