AS Roma have parted ways with head coach Jose Mourinho after a terrible run of form; the Giallorossi have won just one of their previous six Serie A games and are currently ninth in the league.

Jose Mourinho has been fired from Roma after two and a half years in charge, and Daniele De Rossi is set to take over as manager. The Giallorossi have won one of their last six Serie A games and were recently eliminated from the Coppa Italia by city rivals Lazio, with Mourinho sent off during the match. They now sit in ninth place in Serie A, 22 points behind league leaders Inter Milan. Mourinho joined Roma in 2021 and served as manager for two and a half years, leading the club to the Europa Conference League title in 2022. The 60-year-old also led them to the Europa League final last season, where they were defeated by Sevilla on penalties. His contract was set to end in June.

A deal with former Roma captain De Rossi to take charge is nearing completion. De Rossi will lead the team until June, with the club having the option to extend his contract depending on his performance and results. Graham Potter, the former Brighton and Chelsea manager, and Antonio Conte were reportedly considered for the position. A Roma statement read: "We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club. We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours."

Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin personally summoned Mourinho to the Trigoria training field on Tuesday morning. The owners informed Mourinho of their decision, which was carefully considered given the course of the season, particularly the last month. The club's owners believe now is the time for a change in direction. Roma's training session was canceled as a result; they face 18th-placed Verona on Saturday.
