Robert Lewandowski had one year left in his Bayern Munich contract but had long declared that his story with Bayern was over. He has now joined his new team-mates in Miami as part of Barcelona's four-match tour of the United States. In a statement he said; "I'm finally here. I'm delighted to be at Barca. The last few days have been very long, but the deal is done and now I can focus on a new chapter and challenge in my life. I've always wanted to play in LaLiga and for the big clubs. I'm here to help Barca get back to the top and win as many titles as possible." Lewandowski, who has a buyout clause of 500m euros (£425.9m), joined Bayern on a free transfer in 2014 after his departure from Borussia Dortmund. In his last season with the Bundesliga side, he scored 50 goals in 46 games and helped the club win a 10th straight Bundesliga title cementing a decade of dominance in German football. He made 374 appearances for Bayern Munich and scored 344 times becoming the club's second-highest top scorer of all time after legend Gerd Muller. He won the UEFA Champions League during the 2019-20 campaign and has also won the league in all the 8 seasons he has been at Bayern Munich.
He now becomes Barcelona's fourth signing of this transfer window after Raphinha who joined from Leeds, Franck Kessie, and Andreas Christensen who arrived from AC Milan and Chelsea respectively. France winger Ousmane Dembele has also signed a contract extension with the Catalan giants. In August 2021, Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed the club's "very worrying" 1.35 billion euro debt. Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann said Barcelona is "the only club in the world that has no money but can buy every player". "It's kind of weird and kind of crazy for me but in the end they find solutions. I don't know how," Julian added. Bayern has in the meanwhile signed Sadio Mane from Liverpool and Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus in a bid to fill the shoes of their just departed star player.
Bundesliga has been put in the spotlight for failing to manage their star players after Erling Haaland signed for Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund and now Robert Lewandowski for Barcelona from Bayern Munich. The two were considered as the top two players in the Bundesliga and letting any of them go is a mistake let alone the recklessness of allowing both of them to leave. The German Bundesliga is considered one of the top five major club leagues in the world alongside the English Premier League, the Italy Serie A, the French Ligue1, and the Spanish LaLiga.
