Belgium currently sit at position three on the table, two places behind Croatia and Morocco and risk being eliminated from the Qatar FIFA World Cup tonight if the table will remain that way after match day three. Croatia responded to their goalless draw with Morocco in their first Group F match by defeating Canada 4-1 on Sunday, improving their chances of making it out of the group stage while also eliminating Canada in the process. Croatia were made to work for the three points as Alphonso Davies netted for Canada just one minute into the game before Croatia mounted a memorable comeback eventually overcoming the Canadians 4-1.
Zlatko Dalic's side now sit at the top of the group with four points just narrowly above Morocco with whom they differ in goal difference. The 2018 FIFA World Cup runners-up now only require just a draw against Belgium to book their spot in the last 16 of the Qatar World Cup competitions. A victory would guarantee the top spot if Morocco fails to beat Canada by a greater goal margin tonight. Croatia are currently 12th in FIFA World Rankings and boasts of a good run ahead of tonight's match as they are unbeaten in the last eight matches of all competitions. Additionally, they have lost only one of their 18 international matches ever since the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. The last time they beat Belgium was when they secured a 1-0 victory in a 2010 friendly match.
Belgium are praised to be possessing their golden generation who are supposed to steer them into achieving world cup glory. They finished in third place in the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup after beating England in the playoffs. However, they are now currently staring at a possible exit from the Qatar competition in the group stages if they fail to win tonight's match. In their opening fixture of the tournament, Belgium were fortunate to come out victorious in a slender 1-0 win over Canada who totally outplayed them in the game only that the score line did not end in their favour. Their luck, however, ran out when they played against Morocco who punished them 2-0 for their lack of game.
Frictions within the Belgium camp have allegedly emerged, with recent media reports claiming that Romelu Lukaku had to intervene to break up a post-match dressing room bust-up between Kevin De Bruyne and Jan Vertonghen. Indeed, De Bruyne's eyebrow-raising claims that he and his teammates are "too old" to win the World Cup have not helped Belgium's cause, and they are somewhat perplexing as two of this year's pre-tournament favourites, Brazil and Argentina, both have older squads on average. Roberto Martinez is under immense pressure to steer his side out of the group stages and victory is the only outcome that people in Brussels expect from him given that Belgium have severally been termed as favourites to win the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The match might end in a 1-0 win in the favour of Belgium.
