Former Chelsea legend Didier Drogba fails in his bid to become President of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF)

Former Chelsea star and football legend, Didier Drogba finished in the third position in the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) presidential elections. The two-time African player of the year finished behind Yacine Idriss Diallo and Sory Diabate, who finished first and second respectively. Diallo gathered 59 votes followed closely by Diabete with 51 votes as Drogba came a distant third with 21 only managing to garner 21 votes. This means that the 44-year-old former Chelsea player pulls out of the race in the first round as the remaining two contenders head into the second round of voting.

The FIF elections allow the presidents of the top-flight clubs and two lower divisions; Division 2 and Division 3 to vote.  An earlier opinion poll had predicted that if fans were allowed to vote, Didier Drogba would have won the elections by a landslide but since that was not the case, he had to deal with people who do not swoon over his popularity. Drogba submitted his candidacy bid on August 1, 2020, in front of a large gathering at the FIF headquarters in Abidjan. His manifesto was to rebirth the Ivorian football which he claimed was being run badly. His goal was driven by a deep desire to give back to the Ivorian football community and contribute to the development of football in the country.

He played for the Ivory Coast national team between 2002 and 2014 featuring in five African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and three World Cups. He is their all-time top scorer having netted 65 goals in 105 appearances. His 105 appearances were the highest tally after Didier Zokora (123) and Kolo Toure (120).
