The impact of the Milan derby is not only limited to the game but also has an impact on the economic, social, and political spheres of Italy as well.

The rivalry between the two teams is as old as the year 1908 when AC Milan was established with Inter Milan having been founded nine years earlier in 1899. Initially, Inter Milan was considered the elite football club while AC Milan was the ‘commoners’ football club. Inter had stronger financial support, whereas AC had the support of the people in droves. Although today both teams are equal in financial and social support because times have changed. Inter and AC have had good and bad years, but one thing they have in common is the legendary status bestowed upon so many of the players in these teams. The rivalry between the two clubs continues, but Milan fans have plenty to cheer about since they host two of the biggest teams in Serie A of the Italian league.

The two teams have now pushed their rivalry to the modern era with Inter Milan winning the Serie A title of the 2020/21 season as AC Milan came second while AC Milan were crowned champions in the 2021/22 season and Inter Milan runners up. They are two of the most successful clubs in Italian football and boast an illustrious history that can be rivaled only by the likes of Juventus. As a resident of Milan, it is an unwritten rule that you have to like one of the two clubs. You can not reside in the city without being a fanatic of one if not both of the clubs.
