Ajax FC manager. Erik ten Hag has agreed to a deal with Manchester United beginning at the end of the season running up to June 2025 with an option to extend for another year. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, Ten Hag becomes the fifth permanent manager following David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs have also been interim managers in between a position currently held by Ralf Rangnick.
United football director, John Murtough and the technical director, Darren Fletcher led the club in the search for the new boss with the CEO, Richard Arnold only engaging in the final stages of the process. Murtough and Fletcher are said to have settled on Ten Haag as he is the one who aligned most with the club's identity and strategy. Ralf Rangnick is set to take up a consultancy role after the end of this season.
Ten Haag has established himself as one of the most successful coaches in Europe in the past four years at Ajax. He is renowned for his team's attractive attacking football and his commitment to the youth. He will stay at Ajax until the end of the season before taking over at United. Ajax is currently on top of the Eredivisie table and are four points clear of their closest challengers PSV Eindhoven with five games remaining to the end of the league. Haag has committed to finishing the league strongly and making sure Ajax qualifies for the UEFA Champions League. He has previously led Ajax to the Champions League semi-final after knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus in the 2019 campaign. He also worked at Utrecht and Bayern Munich2 where he worked under Pep Guardiola.
