A repeat of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League final will be served at Anfield tomorrow night as Premier League giants Liverpool take on reigning champions Real Madrid in what is promising to be a thrilling game. Jurgen Klopp's side finished second in their group behind Serie A current top-of-the-table Napoli while the title holders finished top of their group. While Thibaut Courtois's sensational saves and Vinicius Junior's winner dominated the on-field talk of last season's Champions League, the match will be remembered as one in which the Reds fans were penned in outside the gates and even further subjected to tear gas before the start of the match. An independent report cleared Liverpool supporters of any wrongdoing following baseless allegations from the authorities' side of late-arriving Liverpool fans with fake tickets causing the disruption.
Very few European teams can boast of getting the better of Napoli this season but only goal difference stood between them and the Reds side in the Group A standings as both Liverpool and Napoli collected 15 points out of a possible 18. The top-four finish in the Premier League is not yet beyond Liverpool's reach following back-to-back wins against Everton and Newcastle. The Reds appear to have turned a corner after their disastrous start to the 2022-23 EPL campaign.
Liverpool have not suffered a Champions League round of 16 exit recently ever since going down to Ancelotti's neighbors Atletico Madrid in the 2019-2020 season. The Reds' unbeaten run at the Anfield Stadium now stands at a respectable seven games and they will be hoping to extend the streak tomorrow night. However, they have a very bad documented record against their visitors.
Carlo Ancelotti's side eliminated Chelsea, PSG, and Manchester City, on their road to lifting their 14th European cup last season. The Los Blancos are never to be ruled out in reaching the final of Europe's top competition especially, during recent past years. They are just from winning another club world cup but their hopes for a successive La Liga title are being challenged by in-form Barcelona who seem to be on the way to dethroning them from the title.
The Los Blancos patchy European form makes pleasant statistics for Liverpool supporters as the Los Blancos have only managed two wins out of six Champions League matches on the road. The defeat to Real Madrid in last season's final stretched the Reds' winless run against the defending champions to six games. This is Liverpool's longest-ever streak without victory against a single opponent in the UCL but there will be an expectant feeling at Anfield tomorrow night now that Jurgen Klopp seems to have managed to stop the rot.
