It will be a show of might as South America and Europe yet again showcase their football prowess on the biggest global stage when Argentina plays France in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup at the Lusail Iconic Stadium. This clearly shows the football dominance of the two continents as they have the world cup trophy shared between themselves in the past events. Five European nations have won the FIFA World Cup 12 times while three of their South American counterparts have bagged it on 9 occasions. France are the current defending champions after they won the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup making it their second in addition to the France 1998 FIFA World Cup. Coincidentally, Argentina have also bagged the FIFA World Cup trophy twice in the Argentina 1978 FIFA World Cup and the Mexico 1986 FIFA World Cup. If they manage to dethrone France as the world champions, it will be the first time they will be crowned world victors on European soil.
France will be looking forward to winning a back-to-back world cup title; a feat only achieved by Brazil in FIFA World Cup history. They beat Croatia 4-2 to be crowned champions in the 2018 edition and have now booked their spot at the world cup final after going past Morocco 2-0 in the semi-finals. They have only suffered one defeat so far in their Qatar campaign and that only came in their last group-stage match where they succumbed 1-0 to Tunisia. They had earlier beaten Australia and Denmark and further went ahead to defeat Poland, England, and Morocco in the elimination rounds. They boast of their star striker Kylian Mbappe who is their top scorer and the world cup front-runner in the golden boot race alongside Lionel Messi. It will be an interesting showdown between the two as they take the golden boot race in the final match battlefield.
South American football giants Argentina avoided an all-South American semifinal against Brazil thanks to Croatia who eliminated the football-mad nation in the quarter-finals knockout rounds. They went ahead to thrash Croatia 3-0 to reach their sixth world cup final. They will be looking forward to erase the painful memories of their last world cup final where they succumbed to a 1-0 extra-time beating from Germany in the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup. Argentina suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat against Saudi Arabia in their opening game at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup but bounced back into winning ways and have now won against Mexico, Poland, Australia, Netherlands, and Croatia in their run-up to the final. Football superstar Lionel Messi will be highly depended on to deliver the trophy to the South American nation. He has won everything an excellent football player can win; Ballon d'Or, Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup, etc. He is arguably the greatest player to ever grace a football pitch and what he lacks to seat in the history books of the likes of Pele of Brazil, Maradona of Argentina, and Ronaldo & Ronaldinho of Brazil is just the world cup trophy. Will he permanently write his name in the book of the football greats who won the world cup trophy? Will the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup be known as the Messi World Cup? The answers to these questions will be known on 18th December at the Lusail Iconic Stadium come Sunday night.
