A local derby with major implications is about to go down at Anfield Stadium today as Liverpool takes on their long-time rivals Everton. The two teams have got very different pressures at both ends of the Premier League table. While Liverpool is looking to outsmart their EPL title rivals Manchester City to be crowned the kings of the Premier League, Everton is fighting hard to avoid relegation as they are just seating one point away from sinking down to the Championship League.
Liverpool comes into the game in high spirits after handing Manchester United an embarrassing 4-0 defeat thanks to Sadio Mane's brace and the goals from Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz who scored a goal each. They now, however, enter the Merseyside derby four points adrift from the league leaders who saw off Watford yesterday in a 5-1 victory. Jurgen Klopp's side remain in hot pursuit of a quadruple having already won the EFL Cup with the FA Cup final in sight and having already qualified for the UEFA Champions League semis where they will face off Villarreal who boast of eliminating Juventus and Bayern Munich from the competition. Liverpool will be very wary going into the UCL first leg match next week as Villarreal has proved to be a giant killer.
Everton have gone through a tough period this season and even changing leadership to Frank Lampard as the head coach has not yielded the expected results. They come into the match after struggling to earn a point during the 1-1 draw against Leister City. Refusing to go down without a fight, the Toffees have taken four points from their last two games with Manchester United being a victim of their survival campaign as the Red Devils were shut down 1-0 at the Goodison Park.
The Reds handed down their city rivals a 4-1 defeat in the first leg fixture of this season's campaign. The Merseyside derby has, however, had surprising results in the past and even Jurgen Klopp admitted that he would miss the derby if Everton were to suffer their first-ever relegation from the Premier League next month.
