The annual English curtain-raiser will take place at the King Power Stadium in Leicester as Premier League champions Manchester City take on the Emirates FA Cup champions Liverpool in the fight for the Community Shield. Jurgen Klopp's side got their hands on both domestic cups last season including the Carabao Cup but it was Pep Guardiola's men that finished as top dogs in the EPL yet again for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The community shield will be staged away from Wembley as the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 final between Germany and England will be taking place at the venue on Sunday. The Women's England team are seeking to go one better than the men did last year in the delayed UEFA Euro 2020 final when they lost to Italy in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Leicester City won the charity match last year when they overpowered Manchester City and now the foxes will be preparing to relinquish the title to either Liverpool or City. The Reds have been crowned outright winners of the Community Shield on 10 occasions - sharing the honour in another five seasons - but not since 2006 have Liverpool got their hands on that particular piece of silverware. Liverpool had their penchant for penalty shootouts to thank for their FA and EFL Cup double over Chelsea last season but most of Liverpool's Community Shield defeats have come from 12 yards the most recent being from Arsenal in the 2020 edition. In pre-season so far, two wins and two defeats are on the scoresheets for the Reds. In one of the wins, the Reds' new signing Darwin Nunez scored 4 goals in his Liverpool debut match making Klopp proud of what he had fished out of the market in the ongoing transfer period.
Manchester City have continued to show their pitch prowess even in the pre-season tour after their new signing Erling Haaland found the back of the net to edge them 1-0 passed Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in a game where lightning literally struck twice. Manchester City Pre-season tour is over but Pep Guardiola will still renew hostilities with his former team and LaLiga giants Barcelona ALS charity friendly at the end of August. The Citizens have now lost more Community Shield matches than they have won after Leicester City prevented them from getting their hands on the trophy last year. Liverpool and Manchester City have emerged to be powerhouses in the recent Premier League years and meetings between the two giants have now become common as the meetings in the last season's campaign saw them play fascinating draws on both occasions.
