Pep Guardiola's side bowed out of the Carabao Cup competition after being eliminated by rising Premier League powerhouse Newcastle unceremoniously. Manchester City dominated possession in the first half of the game but they were later outfought and outpowered by Newcastle in the second half of the match. It was the first time that Guardiola's side lost a 90-minute game since May and arguably the first match that mattered since they were beaten by Tottenham in February. Kalvin Philips came into the match as a replacement for Rodri who was sent off during the Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest. He did not make use of his chance, however, as he failed to take risks to genuinely try and put Eddie Howe's side under pressure.

After the halftime break, Newcastle played with intensity and bravery, and their brilliance outsmarted that of Manchester City as they ensured the reigning EPL champions limped out of the Carabao Cup having inflicted a 1-0 defeat on them. The result means that any hopes of Pep Guardiola's side completing a quadruple this season are over already although after the game Guardiola said that he will be “more than happy” with another treble. Alexander Isak's strike proved enough to ensure that the Magpies sailed through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup. The match between Manchester City and Newcastle saw Guardiola being booked by the referee as he allowed his frustrations to boil over. City exited the EFL Cup in the quarter-final stage last season after being eliminated by Southampton.
