Manchester City have won the English Premier League four times in the past five seasons while Liverpool have won it once but finished as runners-up almost in all the remaining four. It has already started looking as if these two sides will be the clubs to chase this season yet again as they already started the season by renewing their rivalry at the King Power Stadium in the battle for the Community Shield where the Reds emerged victorious. They have also been busy in the transfer market strengthening up their sides even more with credible new signings. Their most notable newbies are Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez for Manchester City and Darwin Nunez for Liverpool. With the chasing pack aiming to close the gap on these two clubs this season, we look at the clubs that have the might and the muscles to challenge these English powerhouses.
Chelsea:
Position last season:3
Players In: Raheem Sterling (£50m), Kalidou Koulibaly (£33m)
Players out: Antonio Rudiger (free), Andreas Christensen (free), Danny Drinkwater (free), Romelu Lukaku (loan)
After the club got a new owner American businessman Todd Boehly, there has been a significant upheaval at the Blues. He started off with high-profile signings of Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly signaling his interest to build a squad ready to face off with other big clubs of Europe. Most probably the England international, Raheem Sterling comes in as a replacement for the Belgium international Romelu Lukaku. Thomas Tuchel's side were top of the table at one stage last time but fell short after they failed to defend and maintain their position. Without a main central striker in their attacking line, Tuchel may now deploy a more fluid front three with the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and, Christian Pulisic available to call upon. The team can surely challenge for the top position in the EPL if they maintain their focus throughout the season.
Tottenham:
Position Last season:4
Players In: Ivan Perisic (free), Fraser Forster (free), Yves Bissouma (£35m), Richarlison (£60m), Clement Lenglet (loan), Djed Spence (£20m)
Players Out: Steven Bergwijn (£26m), Jack Clarke (£10m)
After a poor start last season, Spurs needed the magic of tactician Antonio Conte to recover and finish at the position 4 spot that guaranteed them a playing spot in the coming season's UEFA Champions League. The club has coughed up a whole £60m to acquire the services of Brazil international Richarlison from Everton who is not assured of a starting 11 position showing the strength in depth that the club now possess. Manager Antonio Conte has won the top flight with Juventus, Inter Milan, and Chelsea meaning he possesses the winning mentality and he works around the philosophy of winning. The club also goes into the new season more settled than last season when their key striker Harry Kane almost left for Manchester City. For a club that managed to come from the bottom half of the table at the middle of the season to UCL contesting positions at the end of the season can not be written off in the contestation for the EPL's top position.
Arsenal:
Position last season:5
Players In: Marquinhos (£3m), Fabio Vieira (£30m), Matt Turner (£8m), Gabriel Jesus (£45m), Oleksandr Zinchenko (£30m)
Players Out: Konstantinos Mavropanos (undisclosed), Alexandre Lacazette (free), Matteo Guendouzi (£9m)
The Gunners have not competed in the UEFA Champions League ever since the 2016/17 season. A team with such a stature missing for the most coveted club competition for such a long time leaves them with a thirst to achieve and prove to the world that they still belong to the ‘big boys of Europe’. Their fans will be hoping that their eye-catching new signings can add to a squad that fell away at the end of last season, having looked nailed-on for a top-four place. Manager Mikel Arteta managed to secure a transfer coup when he fished Brazil international Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City for £45m. The boss placed his faith on Arsenal's young stars last season and they fairly tried to get the job done but lacked the experience that was needed in a mature team. With the capture of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinhcenko, the Gunners have got themselves players that come in with a winning mentality at the club since they are used to being in a winning environment. We can be sure that the thirst to perform better can propel Arsenal to even the top spot in the Premier League.
Manchester United:
Position last season:6
Players In: Tyrell Malacia (13m), Christian Eriksen (free), Lisandro Martinez (£55m)
Players Out: Dean Henderson (loan), Edinson Cavani (free), Juan Mata (free), Paul Pogba (free), Jesse Lingard (free), Lee Grant (retired), Nemanja Matic (free), Andreas Pereira (£10m)
The Red Devils last won the EPL ten years ago under the leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson. The mantle to deliver the title to Old Trafford now falls on new boss Erik Ten Hag whom United poached from Ajax. Although big names such as Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard have departed with the future of Cristiano Ronaldo still in doubt, their preseason start has shown us that Manchester United still possess the winning mentality and they are made to be ranked among the best of the best in the football sport. There is optimism that the new manager Erik Ten Hag will be able to understand the problem at the club and tackle it head-on to get the club back to its glory days. A team of the caliber of Manchester United will definitely be in the race for the English Premier League title and the odds are; The Red Devils might shake up the football world yet again!
Another team worth mentioning is New Castle. The Magpies have been improving at an increasing rate ever since the take-over that saw them become the richest club in the world. In the second half of last season, they collected 38 points which made them third coming after Liverpool with 48 and Manchester City with 46.
