Manchester City will host RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 knockout stages and will be aiming to right their wrongs at the Red Bull Arena.

Red Bull Leipzig managed to hold the Premier League champions to a 1-1 draw in the first leg three weeks ago but going head on with the Citizens on their own turf will prove to be a different kettle of fish. In-demand center-back Josko Gvardiol saved Leipzig's bacon in the first leg of their round of 16 match against Man City, whose failure to end the game forced them to shake hands on a stalemate in Germany. Josko in tonight's match may be looking forward to even add a few more pounds to his value.  Riyad Mahrez put the English giants ahead in the 27th minute of the game but Leipzig levelled up with only 20 minutes remaining of the game.

Manchester City are fighting for success on three fronts this season as they are held up in a Premier League title race with league leaders Arsenal who are five points ahead of them. They are also in the advanced stages of the FA Cup competition. Therefore, the hope of achieving a treble is very much alive in the hearts and minds of City supporters.  Man City are attempting to avoid their first last-16 elimination since losing to Monaco in the 2016–17 season. They also have a chance to make Champions League history this week if they win, as they may tie Arsenal's record of 14 years for the longest home unbeaten streak by an English team in the competition. The English champions have remarkably not lost in 23 home matches in Europe's premier competition; winning 21 of them.

Interestingly, current Man City manager Pep Guardiola still stands as the last manager to lead a German club to a Champions League win at the Etihad with Bayern Munich in 2013-14. Since then, nine attempts from Bundesliga powerhouses to get the better of Man City on their own turf have ended in failure. However, Leipzig's five-game unbeaten run in the Champions League should stand them in good stead as they seek to inflict more European misery on the Premier League reigning champions.

The Etihad faithful were treated to a glut of goals when Man City put a Christopher Nkunku-inspired Leipzig to the sword 6-3 at the Etihad in 2021, and all three meetings between two sides seeking an elusive European honour have seen both teams find the back of the net.
