Napoli finished top of their group ahead of Liverpool to book themselves a spot in the round of 16 against Eintracht Frankfurt. The Serie A leaders advanced to the round of 16 after winning their first five games, but the hosts fought hard on the final day of Group D to take second place. The pair now contest the first leg of a tie which decides who will reach the quarter-finals. Napoli have been ruthless this season and are on very good form topping the Serie A and leaving second-placed Inter Milan with five points. During the first phase of the UEFA Champions League, they Europe sit up and take notice of their breathtaking abilities with their footballing prowess.
The Italian powerhouse have not won the Italian league ever since the heydays of Diego Maradona during the 1989-1990 season but look set to bag the trophy this time around. It is worth noting that Napoli raked in 20 goals during the group stages, the most of any side at that level of the competition. Napoli have now won 18 of their last 19 league matches following their win against Sassuolo on Friday. They have only lost one match in the league this season, a loss that they suffered to second-placed Inter. Their downtime, however, came when they were eliminated from the Coppa Italia by lowly placed Cremonese. They are very much in form to a point that they might become Italy's first UCL winner ever since Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan in 2010.
Tonight will be the third meeting between Frankfurt and Napoli with the German side winning the last two in the UEFA Cup almost three decades ago. To date, they have only lost two of their last eleven matches against Italian opposition with their last beating coming against Palermo in 2006. Frankfurt are not a team to wish away as they are on a steady rise up and are the current holders of the UEFA Europa League. They now become the eleventh German team to play in the UCL round of 16 knockout stages which is incidentally the most of any nation.
Frankfurt are currently sixth in the Bundesliga table and are have won 2-0 recently against Werder Bremen. They are also in the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal and their first elite competition in Europe for several generations awaits. Tuesday's hosts boast a rich heritage in European Cup football, having lost the classic 1960 final to Real Madrid. Emulating such a feat this year, though, will require the current squad to find a way past white-hot Napoli. One thing for sure though is that tonight's match will be full of entertaining football.
