About 400 England fans traveled to Munich for their nation's match against Germany in the UEFA Nations League. Seven of these 4000 England fans were arrested last night before the match kick-off. Three were arrested for making a Nazi salute, another three for inciting the police, and one for urinating in public. For a long time, English fanatics have been known to bring hooliganism in their matches sometimes leading to chaos and causing mayhem. The Football Association (FA) was working in conjunction with local German authorities and the police to limit disorder in Germany. The match against Germany was the first time the English national team had been accompanied by a significant number of away supporters since the lockdown caused by the coronavirus in March 2020 and it had been their first game in Munich ever since they beat Germany 5-1 back in the year 2001.
The match had goals by Hofmann and Harry Kane as the entertaining 90 minutes ended in a 1-1 stalemate. England had to play their Nations League match on Saturday against Italy at Wembley on Saturday without fans as they were serving a ban following the unrest that was experienced hours before kick-off of the Euro 2020 final where Italy beat England on penalties to be crowned the champions. Concerns have also been raised over the behavior of the English fans with cases of increased pitch invasions at the end of the domestic season running from the English Premier League down to the lower leagues. But there were more than 30,000 spectators at Puskas Arena, with the Hungarian FA having used a Uefa regulation that allows children up to 14 to attend for free if accompanied by an adult. Hungary beat England 1-0 in the match. England players were jeered in Budapest as they took a knee before the game despite most of the crowd present being children.
Gareth Southgate, the English national team coach said that he does not mind not getting impressive results at the UEFA Nations League as he tries out different squads as he is looking at the longer picture of the upcoming Qatar FIFA World Cup in November and December. He decried the lack of adequate friendly games for national team managers to familiarise with their players and said that he had to seize this opportunity at the Nations League to keenly study his squad.
