Robert Lewandowski has made it clear that he is not signing a new contract with Bayern Munich and he expects swift progress. His announcement sent shockwaves through the systems of Bundesliga champions as the majority of the people in the Bayern Munich hierarchy were expecting that he will hang his boots from the sport while still playing at the club. The 33-year-old striker netted his 50th goal of the season during the weekend in what was Bayern's final game of this season's campaign. The stand that the Poland international has taken leaves the club at risk of losing him on a free transfer if they do not heed his calls of selling him off to another club. "I spoke to Hasan Salihamidzic and told him that I had made a decision not to extend my contract with Bayern," Lewandowski told Polish broadcaster Viaplay.
The Polish striker said that it was very possible the weekend's game was the last game that he played with Bayern Munich. He only has one year left in his contract and he has said that they are reaching an agreement with the club that they either sell him or he plays his final season at the club but a contract extension is not an option. He finished this season as the Bundesliga top goal scorer for the seventh season and matched Gerd Muller's record to secure the league's cannon trophy once again.
The former Borussia Dortmund star is now linked with Catalonia giants Barcelona. Among Europe's top five leagues, he is the top scorer ahead of Real Madrid's Karim Benzema who has 44 goals so far across all competitions. The Los Blancos have been highly linked with signing Kylian Mbappe who will pair up with Benzema and this will force the Catalan giants, their arch-rivals to step up their transfer game in the market especially after missing out on Erling Haaland who signed for Manchester City.
