Tesla owner Elon Musk recently joked on Twitter that he would buy off Manchester United? What if it were true?

As the richest person on the planet, Tesla boss Elon Musk is known to splash cash. He recently sold $6.9 billion in shares to fund a Twitter take-over, an attempt that flopped in the last minutes of the deal. Could he now have his sight on the world of sports? Well maybe, Musk tweeted on Wednesday that he was "buying Manchester United," adding "ur welcome." The remark came as part of a series of tweets in which he joked about his political preferences, but when he was asked directly if it was true, Musk conceded that "no, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams." That still did not stop enthusiastic fans of the English Premier League from reacting to the idea. "You have absolutely no idea the sheer amount of hope you just have to a million fans worldwide," wrote one Manchester  United supporter on Twitter. "Please do it, we badly need a good businessman owner and more importantly we would have the coolest football team owner EVER!" wrote another.

Manchester United are one of the world's most successful and popular team. They have been crowned champions of England in a record 20 times and thrice, they have been crowned champions of Europe. The Glazer family are the current owners of the club after buying it for US$955.51 million in 2005, but a movement to oust the Americans has grown over the past year as the club struggled on the pitch. Musk is currently trying to back out of a US$44 billion agreement to buy Twitter, with the social media company taking him to court. Manchester United are currently bottom of the table after they opened the Premier League season with a pair of lackluster losses under new manager Erik Ten Hag. Cristiano Ronaldo has also openly shown his desire to leave the club citing that he wants to play in the elite UEFA Champions League

There have been protests in the past from Manchester United fans with an aim to oust the current owners of the club but the best the protestors achieved was only to chase away the former sporting director. Manchester United is yet to win a single EPL cup after the resignation of veteran football manager Sir Alex Fergurson. They have had several managers who have ended up leaving the club unceremoniously and one is left to wonder whether the problem lies in the coaching staff or if it is a management issue.
