The 2022 Safari Rally will take place between 23rd to 26th June and we delve on the events that led to its cancellation back in 2003 and the progress the nation made to make a comeback in the WRC.

The World Rally Championship (WRC) is the highest level of competition in the motorsport industry of rallying regulated by the Federation International of Automobile (FIA). It contains a calendar of 13 events and the Kenyan edition is known as the Safari Rally. Kenya is the only African nation to be on the WRC calendar. The Safari Rally was started as the East African coronation rally in 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd of England who had been on holiday in Kenya one year earlier when she learned of the passing on of her father King George the 6th. If there is any single event that fired the imagination of Kenyans and became the most talked, most liked and enjoyed event then Safari Rally has no equal. Ian Duncan and his co-driver Ian Muroe were the only Kenyans to have ever won the Safari Rally after becoming champions in the 1994 edition driving a Toyota Celica GT4 Turbo. The Kenyan Safari Rally is widely regarded as one of the most popular rallies in Africa and it only returned to the country in 2021 after a 19-year hiatus. The earlier rallies before 2002 were notorious for being by far the most difficult rallies in the WRC championship to take on. The Safari Rally was so difficult to such an extent that it was said winning this particular rally felt like winning three rallies at once. What made it difficult was the changing weather conditions and the rough roads often characterized by sharp rocks which made life difficult for team personnel.

The lack of finance and organization made the Kenyan event to be excluded from the rally calendar in 2003. In September 2019, the rally was reintroduced in the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar which was to start with the 2020 rally held between 16th and 19th July but was later called off in an effort to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. After an 18-year hiatus, the Safari Rally eventually made a comeback in 2021 and was held from the 24th to the 27th of June. Rally superstar, Sebastian Ogier and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia emerged as winners in their Toyota Yaris WRC

The 2022 Safari Rally edition is expected to be held from Thursday, 23rd June to Sunday, 26th June. The features of this year's rally will include exotic wildlife, stunning picturesque scenery, and challenging dirt roads. Teams will have to tackle the challenge of unpredictable weather conditions which can transform dry and dusty trails into mud blogs and will additionally have to deal with rocky and rutted tracks. But these are the things that make the Safari rally exciting and motorsports enthusiasts in Kenya are looking forward to the ones in a year event where they will get to see and cheer on their favorite drivers as they enjoy the beautiful and adventurous sceneries that the country has to offer. The 2022 Safari Rally battle is seen to narrow down to current world champion, Sebastien Ogier and his main challenger, Kalle Rovanpera.
