Brazilian and Paris Saint Germain star Neymar Junior is set to face trial for alleged fraud in regards to his transfer to Barcelona from Brazilian side Santos. Two of the Catalan giants' presidents, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu are also reportedly being charged by the prosecutor's office in Catalunya. Neymar will go on trial on October 17th which will be just four weeks before the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off in the Middle East nation. Barcelona signed Neymar from Santos in July 2013, with the clubs declaring the deal was worth just €17.1 million (£14m/$17m). However, DIS, which owned 40 percent of Neymar's rights during his time at Santos, believed much more money was involved in the deal. DIS now claims that much more money was involved in the deal and that it should have earned much more.
DIS made an initial complaint in the year 2015 leading to an investigation being launched. If found guilty, Barcelona will face an €8.4m fine. The prosecutor's office is pushing for a two-year prison sentence for Neymar plus a €10m fine and five years for ex-president Rosell. This is the second trial that will take place surrounding the transfer as the legal situation for Barcelona and Neymar has dragged on for several years. The move was the subject of an investigation by the Madrid prosecutor's office in 2014. This forced Rosell to resign from his post as president. It was later confirmed that Barcelona had indeed paid more to complete the Neymar transfer from Santos.
The real amount in the transfer was actually €86.2m (£73m/$88m) in total and around €40m went straight to Neymar's family. Afterward, Barca's president Rosell and his successor Bartomeu were charged with tax fraud. It is now revealed that Neymar's family got the money from his transfer after Barcelona paid N&N part of the transfer fee which is a company owned by the family.
