The football world is about to witness a more than century long rivalry that runs deeper than football between their favourite teams Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The Catalan giants meet the Spanish capital giants for the 282nd time in a much hyped El Clasico meeting. Real Madrid will be looking to make it six wins in all competitions as they welcome their arch rivals, Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday night. Barcelona on the other hand will be aiming for a 5th successive LaLiga win as they look to catch up with Sevilla who are currently occupying the number two spot. The heated rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona Football Club comes about as a result of Madrid and Barcelona being the two largest cities in Spain and they are sometimes identified with opposing political positions, with Barcelona viewed as representing Catalan nationalism while Real Madrid viewed as representing Spanish nationalism

The Los Blancos lead in competitive head to head matches with 100 wins as Barcelona have 96 with 52 matches ending in a stalemate. On the other hand, the Catalan giants lead in exhibition matches having 19 victories against Madrid's 4 with 10 of the matches ending in draw. Thus in total, Barcelona are ahead having 115 wins to their names against the 104 managed by Real Madrid and the El Clasico has a record 62 draws.

The rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid has long surpassed the sporting dimension so much that even the elections to the clubs presidencies is strongly politicised. Therefore, the Sunday's match might not be decisive in terms of the LaLiga's title race, but it's still a fiery rivalry with plenty on the line. For Barcelona, Xavier Hernandez has been wanting to showcase just how quick the Blaugrana revolution is going and there is no better opportunity to showcase this than beating their bitter rivals while For Real Madrid, it's the final real hurdle between them and winning the league. Real Madrid won the first leg tie at the Camp Nou and Barcelona will be looking to give them a reply. Away from much of the politics surrounding this clash, football lovers all over the world will be waiting to see which side will silence the other come Sunday night at the blow of the 90th minute whistle. Will it be the Catalan giants or the Spanish capital giants?
