The Champions League fever has hit new heights after Thursday's group stage draw. Two of the best strikers on the planet will return to their former clubs after massive summer transfers, as Robert Lewandowski and Barcelona will face his former club, Bayern Munich. Erling Haaland, meanwhile, will also return to his old stomping ground as a member of Manchester City, who were drawn with Borussia Dortmund. Barcelona, Bayern, and Inter Milan are in one of the toughest groups the only underdog in the group being Viktoria Plezn.
Group B consists of LaLiga's Atletico Madrid, Bundesliga's Bayern Leverkusen, Belgium's Club Brugge, and Portugal's FC Porto. Group A will see Premier League giants Liverpool battle it out with Serie A's Napoli alongside Ajax and Rangers. Group C is being referred to as the group of death as it comprises the giants of Catalonia Barcelona, Serie A last season runners-up Inter Milan and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. Viktoria Plezn finishes up that group. Group D has Tottenham, Marseille, Sporting C.P, and Eintracht Frankfurt. Group E has Serie A champions AC Milan, EPL giants Chelsea, Dinamo Zagreb, and RB Salzburg. Group F includes the reigning LaLiga and UEFA Champions League champions Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, RB Leipzig, and Celtic. Group G has Premier League title holders Manchester City, Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, and FC Copenhagen. The final group H has the Ligue1 powerhouse Paris Saint Germain, Italian giants Juventus, Benfica, and Maccabi Haifa.
The group stages in the Champions League will begin on September 6th and 7th running all the way to November 1st and 2nd. The Round of 16 draw will take place on Monday 7 November. This stage involves two-legged ties which will be played on 14/15/21/22 February and 7/8/14/15 March 2023. It’s important to note here that from last year, away goals no longer count in the knockout rounds - a tie that ends level after the home and away matches have been played will go to extra-time - 15 minutes per half. At the end of that, if the score is still level, the game will be resolved by a penalty shootout. The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be held on Friday 17 March 2023. The quarter-finals first leg will then be played on 11 and 12 April 2023 for first leg with the return fixtures being on 18 and 19 April 2023. The first leg of the Semi-finals will feature on 9 and 10 May 2023 with the second leg ties featuring on 16 and 17 May 2023. The 2022/23 Champions League final will be played at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul on Saturday 10 June 2023.
