Veteran former Spain defender Sergio Ramos has announced that he is returning to his home-town club Sevilla after playing for 18 years away.

"It's a very special day, returning home is always a tremendous joy, now we have to do the medical, Happy to return and try to contribute as soon as possible which is the important thing." was the first thing that Ramos told the media after a question was popped up to him about his return to Sevilla. Sevilla are now at the bottom of the La Liga table without any point after losing their first three matches but will be playing in the UEFA Champions League thanks to being crowned champions of the UEFA Europa League. Their Champions League campaign will start on the 20th of September. The tactical defender left Sevilla at the age of 19 to join Real Madrid for a then-record fee for a Spanish defender. He then went ahead to sign for PSG in 2021 but has been without a club this summer since his contract with the French capital giants ran out.

According to reports, Ramos had a good offer from Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. "I was eager to return home. It made no sense to go anywhere else without passing through here," said Ramos who was born on the outskirts of Seville. In his 16 seasons playing for Los Blancos, Ramos won La Liga five times, the Champions League a record four times, and also helped Real Madrid secure four Carabao Cup titles. He played for the Spanish national team in a record 180 games where he scored 23 goals and was part of the squads that won the 2010 South Africa FIFA World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 Europa titles.

Sergio Ramos is now expected to help Sevilla navigate through this season and has just come at the right time for the club as they are in need of a leader in the defending line. The Spanish defender has also confessed that it would have been pointless for him to go somewhere else as he was nearing his retirement in his professional career. His other mega offers apart from the one that came from Al Ittihad were coming from the Major Soccer League and Turkey amid interests from other European clubs. Ramos has, however, expressed that he is delighted to return to play for Sevilla as he revealed that it was a debt he owed to both his father and grandfather who he described as diehard supporters of the Spanish Club. At the start of his professional career, Ramos spent two seasons at Sevilla with the senior team before joining Real Madrid.
