After just one and a half years in charge of Paris Saint Germain, Mauricio Pochettino was relieved off his duties despite winning the Ligue1 title. Former Nice manager Christophe Galtier has now been given a two-year contract as the new coach of the French capital club. He exited Nice last month and he was the second option to take over from Pochettino as former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was reported to be the first choice. Zidane turned down the offer as he opted to wait on the French national team coach which he is rumored to take the coaching role after the Qatar FIFA 2022 World Cup.
This is what the new PSG boss had to say; "I am delighted to join Paris Saint-Germain, I would like to thank the chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, [football advisor] Luis Campos and the club for their confidence in me. I am fully aware of the responsibilities involved to coach this extraordinary team, which is one of the most competitive and spectacular squads in Europe. I am delighted to work with all of these talented players as well as the top-level staff here at the club. We acknowledge everything that Paris Saint-Germain represents in French and international football. My focus is on ambition, hard work and making the most of the team’s potential. I am delighted to become head coach of this team and to be on the bench at the magnificent Parc des Princes, a stadium that embodies a passion for football."
Galtier was the man who guided Lille to an unlikely Ligue 1 triumph during the 2020-21 campaign at PSG and Pochettino’s expense. He then went ahead to spend only one season with Nice. Things did not go as well at Nice as they had at Lille as he managed to finish fifth in the league. Former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre has taken over the position of Galtier at Nice now that he has joined PSG. Pochettino had succeeded current Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel as PSG manager and he became just the third manager to lead Les Parisiens to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League competition which is arguably the most competitive club competition in the football sport. He also lifted the Coupe de France within his first six months in charge of the French capital giants. Lionel Messi headlined an influx of high-profile signings last summer, with the club also recruiting Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, Gini Wijnaldum, and Sergio Ramos. The club already had Kylian Mbappe, Neymar Junior, and Angel Di Maria just to mention but a few stars. PSG's star-studded squad won the title quicker than any other club in Europe's top five leagues last term and also recorded the biggest points margin over the second place across those divisions. The UCL, however, remained to be elusive as Pochettino's gave up a 2-0 aggregate lead to be eliminated by Spanish capital giants Real Madrid in the round of 16 knockout stage.
Pochettino was supposed to leave the club at 2023 according to his contract but the two parties reached a mutual agreement to terminate the deal early. Luis Campos became the new sporting director last month after Leonardo was shown the door relinquishing his position as a football advisor.
