Despite some spells of poor form, French powerhouse Paris Saint Germain were able to reclaim the Ligue1 title from Lille who had been crowned the champions last season. Having crumbled out of their UEFA Champions League campaign following a second leg comeback mounted by eventual finalists Real Madrid thanks to Karim Benzema's hat-trick, then some things have to change. Qatar Sports Investment bought the club in 2011 and the capital city giants have achieved a lot in the past decade and won many trophies and titles save to the UCL cup. The club is one of the few in the world that boasts star players in its squad the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Angel Di Maria just to name but a few. From the managerial perspective, the club has had the privilege of working with the world's best managers in the likes of Laurent Blanc, Unai Emery, Thomas Tuchel, and now Mauricio Pochettino.
With all this kind of quality in one place, one will not be wrong to say that PSG have underperformed themselves when it comes to European competitions. They have only been in 2 Champions League semi-finals in the last 10 years only appearing in one final where they lost to Bayern Munich. It feels like now is as good a time as any for those in charge to take decisive action and put the club on a more consistent, positive track. Though PSG are hoping to keep Mbappe a little bit longer, the reality is they could lose him to Real Madrid at the end of the season and this will definitely work against them given that Argentine superstar Lionel Messi is yet to find the mind-blowing form he used to enjoy at Barcelona.
If Mbappe ends up leaving the club, then PSG will need another marquee signing and someone who can lead the club both at the pitch and in the dressing room. This is a role that Lionel Messi and Neymar are unable to fit in given that they are approaching the sunset of their careers. Erling Haaland has agreed on a contract with Manchester City and thus he is not an option. It is rumoured that Paul Pogba, Mohamed Salah, and Robert Lewandowski are on the shortlist of candidates to be brought in at the Parc de Princess should Mbappe leave the club. Even if the two were to be brought they can only play short time solutions especially given the advancing age of Lewandowski. Having being given time to adapt to a new life, a new club, a new football, and a different role, Lionel Messi might be back to performing his magic next season but also the magic will not last for many seasons to come. PSG management needs to keep a close eye during the next transfer and fish out young ambitious talents especially if it happens that French superstar Mbappe ditches them for Real Madrid.
