sokapro-Is Onana a solution or a problem for Manchester United?

Manchester United experienced a nightmare start to the UEFA Champions League in their game against Bayern Munich thanks to goalkeeper misery in the mistakes of Andre Onana.

Manchester United should have been looking forward to their return to the UEFA Champions League but their recent form meant there was a sense of fear as they arrived at the Allianz Arena to face the deadly Bundesliga title holders Bayern Munich. They made a promising start to the match but their fears were soon realized when Andre Onana made the biggest error of his United career so far and gifted a goal to Leroy Sane to set the motion for a 4-3 defeat. The Red Devils brutally cut ties with their former number-one Spanish keeper David de Gea and opted to sign Onana for £47m ($57m) owing to the value they put to his skills with the ball.

Andre Onana's weakness at keeping the ball out is now becoming a point of concern to United boss Erik Ten Hag whose promising first year in charge of the club is at risk of going unnoticed as his second season is slowly turning into a nightmare both on and off the pitch. The Dutch tactician has now lost his third consecutive game and if things do not turn around quickly, he might be subjected to the unwanted fate that his predecessors before him have faced. The only consolation for United in their game against Bayern is that they kept on fighting in the second half through their new signing Rasmus Hojlund and star player Casemiro but as the game progressed, they might have wished that they had made the choice to sign England captain Harry Kane than let him slip off to Bayern. Kane enjoyed an enjoyable Champions League debut in his new jersey.

Harry Kane has only been a Bayern Munich player for slightly more than a month but he already looks well settled into Thomas Tuchel's squad and yesterday's match against United was another fine performance from the England international. Kane must be glad that he joined Bayern instead of the sinking Manchester United ship. The mere presence of Kane in the box made him a threat to United and he finally scored a well-deserved penalty against them. He had to leave Tottenham due to his thirst to win a title more so the Champions League and it seems that he is not in Bayern just to participate in the tournament but also to win it.

Onana's shot-stopping ability is well known but he has recently had a few bad days in office while donning the Manchester United jersey. He has already conceded 14 goals in his first six big competitive games with United. His teammates are now pointing fingers his way, something that he does not definitely want to get used to. At least he fronted up after the big game and his big mess and took full responsibility for his mistakes by saying: 'I'm the one who let the team down. The team was good, I think because of me we didn't win the game. This is the life of a goalkeeper. It was the key point. I have to learn from it, be strong, and move on. I have a lot to prove. My start in Manchester is not how I wanted. This was probably my worst game. It's tough, it's a tough time." All eyes will now be on Onana as United go into their next game as he looks to avoid being the weakest link in the team. Onana had a successful stint at Inter Milan where he won the Serie A and reached last season's UEFA Champions League final before signing for United.
