Real Madrid were able to overturn a first leg 1-0 deficit suffered at Parc de Princes to beat Paris Saint Germain 3-1 taking the aggregate total to 3-2. Benzema was the man of the match as he netted in a hat-trick to ensure the Los Blancos sailed through. The results puts Mauricio Pochettino at risk at the helm of PSG since one of his main tasks was to ensure that the UEFA Champions League tittle gets to Paris.
However, Kylian Mbappe did what he does best, he was the one who opened the goal scoring sheet at the 39th minute a few minutes just before half time. He was widely expected to shine at the Santiaogo Bernabeu ahead of his much anticipated move to Real Madrid. Things however did not go as anyone really expected. As Madrid prepared to crown Mbappe their new Prince, Benzema reminded them that he was still King. He became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League history. He is also the first French player to score three hat-tricks in the competition.
Benzema is now the third leading goal scorer in Real Madrid's history with 309 goals just behind Raul and Cristiano Ronaldo. Only Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Robert Lewandwoski have more goals than him in the total Champions League tally. This victory and Madrid's march to the quarterfinals is as much Benzema's success as it is PSG's failure.
