The German Football Association have announced today that Julian Nagelsman will take over from Hansi Flick as the senior men's team manager. The 36-year-old has put pen to paper today on a deal that will keep him in charge of the team until 31st July 2024 after the Euro 2024 is done and dusted. His appointment comes after Flick was sacked as the head coach following a 4-1 beating from Japan. Flick's tenure lasted for only 17 games where he won just a mere 4 of them. The German national team have endured a difficult run since the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup where they were eliminated in the group stages following a shocking 2-1 defeat to Japan after drawing 1-1 with Spain. They, however, managed a 4-2 victory against Costa Rica in the final game but that was not enough to take them through to the elimination rounds as they finished third behind group leaders Japan and second-placed Spain.

The 2014 World Cup champions have only won three of the ten matches they have played since the start of the tournament in Qatar losing half of those fixtures. Before recently beating the 2018 World Cup champions France 2-1, they had previously lost to 4-1 to Japan, endured a 2-0 hammering by Colombia, and suffered a 1-0 defeat by Poland. The German Football Association will now be hoping that Nagelsman will be able to turn the situation around ahead of the European championship in Germany next year in the months of June and July. Speaking on his appointment, Nagelsman said: “We have a European Championship in our own country. That's something special - something that happens every few decades. I subordinate everything to the fact of having a great tournament in a great country. I have a great desire to take on this challenge. The appearance in Dortmund was the beginning. We will be a close-knit group next year.”
