A series of articles published in France and Spain before their UEFA Champions League match against Benfica Lisbon said that Kylian Mbappe was frustrated in Paris and was looking for a way out. The FIFA 2018 World Cup winner said he was stunned by the rumors when they surfaced last week ahead of a Champions League game. “I’m very happy, I have never asked to leave in January,” Mbappe told reporters at the Parc des Princes stadium after PSG defeated Marseille 1-0 on Sunday. “Some people might think I was involved in this, but I was not at all. I was as shocked as anyone else ... I just wanted to say that it’s completely untrue," he added.
In this past transfer window, Mbappe had been close to joining Spanish capital giants Real Madrid on a free transfer but he abandoned the deal in the last minute as he opted to further his stay at Paris instead by signing a contract extension of two more years with an option of extending for one more season. He joined the French powerhouse from Monaco in 2017 when he was still a teenager and he has often admitted that playing for Real Madrid was his childhood fantasy. He did not rule out making the move to Madrid one day even when he signed his contract extension in Paris.
Early last month, rumors had it that the French international was not getting along well with Brazilian forward Neymar and that he wanted him out of the club. Paris Saint Germain even tried to sell the forward to a willing club amongst them Chelsea but the transfer window closed before any team could table an offer for the forward. Initially, Mbappe used to say that Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was his idol but he has come to appreciate the fact that Lionel Messi who is now his teammate at PSG is the Greatest Of All Time (G.O.A.T). Lionel Messi made a move from Barcelona to PSG last year in tears and it seems that the football superstar has now got along with the rhythm of French football. The Argentine is looking forward to winning the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup in an Argentina jersey before he hangs his boots on international duty.
