Paris Saint-Germain, led by their star attacking triumvirate of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar, were aiming for Champions League glory last season, but again came up short. The French capital giants failed to get past the Spanish capital giants Real Madrid in a difficult round of 16 fixture. They gave up a 1-0 first-leg advantage to be crashed 3-1 in the second leg following a Karim Benzema hat-trick which sank the Parisians ship. PSG have been winning back-to-back Ligue1 titles ever since the 2012 takeover by the rich Qataris but the UEFA Champions League has remained to be an elusive dream to them. PSG are yet to win any single UCL title having been eliminated 14 times it has qualified for the continental showpiece event. It has been knocked out in the last 10 competitions in a row. Only Arsenal have won more matches in the Champions League without winning the trophy. Arsenal have won 83 games while PSG have won 69.
The French capital giant's owners seem to have their eyes fixated on the most coveted trophy in club competition and the proof has been the firing of their coaches every two or one seasons despite some of them having performed very well in other local competitions including clinching the Ligue1 trophy. Ever since the takeover PSG has had a total of six coaches, namely; Carlo Ancelotti, Laurent Blanc, Unai Emery, Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, and now Cristophe Galtier who was appointed as late as yesterday. The closest Paris Saint Germain have come to winning the Champions League was during the 2019-20 campaign, when they reached the final, where they were beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich in Lisbon, with Kingsley Coman scoring the game-winner in the 59th minute. That season PSG topped a group comprising Real Madrid, Club Brugge, and Galatasaray. They then went ahead to eliminate Borussia Dortmund, Atalanta, and RB Leipzig in the knockout stages. The club then went ahead to reach in the semifinal stage in the following 2020-21 season just the same stage they had reached in the 1994-95 campaign.
Even though PSG have not won the UCL title, a couple of its players have enjoyed the glory that comes with lifting that trophy. They include Lionel Messi and Neymar who have lifted the trophy with Barcelona, Angel Di Maria, Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, and Keylor Navas with Real Madrid, and Georginio Wijnaldum with Liverpool. They recently won a transfer battle against Real Madrid who wanted their young player Kylian Mbappe in their squad and himself, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr will be very instrumental in leading the rest of the pack to their first Champions League glory.
