sokapro-UEFA Champions League: AC Milan vs Newcastle

The first game of this season UEFA Champions League will feature AC Milan take on Newcastle at the San Siro in what will be the first match of the Premier League team in Europe's most elite competition courtesy of their fourth place finish on the EPL table last season after missing out for 20 years.

Newcastle find themselves dining at Europe's top table for the first time in two decades as they get a baptism by fire back into the UEFA Champions League competition where they are set to face off with Italian powerhouse AC Milan tonight at the San Siro. The Magpies have just come from ending a three-game losing streak after finally managing to get one over Brentford having initially lost to Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton & Albion. AC Milan were on the other hand humiliated by their arch-city rivals Inter Milan after being trumped 5-1 in what was expected by many to be a hardly fought-out derby. A heavy downpour drenched those in attendance at San Siro on Saturday, but there was definitely no rain on the Inter parade who were enjoying seeing their team get one over their arch-rivals in what was a one-sided derby performance. Inter Milan scored five games against AC Milan for the first time since 1974 in complete destruction.

A bullish Milan, however, had three opening wins prior to their annihilation as they enjoyed victories over Bologna, Torino, and Roma. They now welcome Newcastle at the San Siro having just lost one of their 13 last competitive matches as the ‘home side’ as they bested Premier League opposition beating Tottenham and Chelsea in last season's run to the semi-finals where their hopes again were dwindled by their city rivals Inter Milan who ended up finishing as runners-up after slightly losing the final to Manchester City who won Europe's much coveted club trophy for the first time in their history.

While Milan were busy receiving a beating, Newcastle were on the other end of the scoring line last weekend as they had the better of Brentford to end their three-game run without a win. A narrow defeat at Manchester City in what was a competitive match on the opening day was understandable, but giving a 1-goal lead away to a 10 men Liverpool side and being singlehandedly torn down by Brighton's Evan Ferguson led to some murmurs of discontent. Newcastle now gear up for the first Champions League appearance since 2003 where their run then was ended after losing out in a penalty shootout against Partizan. They are now set to face AC Milan tonight before later facing Paris Saint Germain in Group F, one which has been described as a ‘group of death’. The Italian powerhouse are most likely to carry the day given that the squad is filled with blood hungry for revenge as payback for their humiliation on Saturday, and what better way to serve your revenge than winning a Champions League game?
