sokapro-UEFA Champions League: PSG vs Borussia Dortmund

One of the most highly anticipated Champions League group stage fixtures will take place at the Parc des Princes tonight when La Liga title holders PSG face off with Bundelsiga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Paris Saint Germain and Borussia Dortmund join AC Milan and Newcastle in a mouthwatering group F which has been referred to as ‘the group of death’ because of its presence of European heavyweights. The French capital giants begin yet another quest for what has been an elusive Champions League title, having fallen short on many past occasions. On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund have only one European title to their name having won the European crown in the 1996-1997 season. The Bundesliga giants, however, know too well about coming so close yet so far, having failed to dethrone perennial Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich last season.

Dortmund enter the UCL opener on the back of a 4-2 league success over Freiburg whereas PSG are determined to right the wrongs that saw them lose to Nice in a 3-2 home defeat. PSG and BVB have only ever locked horns four times in the European elite competition despite their frequent qualifications for the Champions League in recent seasons. The encounters have ended in two draws, and each team has a win over the other. The two teams first met during the 2010-11 Europa League season with Dortmund under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp while PSG were led by Antoine Kombouare. The first encounter at Signal Iduna Park ended 1-1 while the return fixture at Parc de Princess concluded at a low-key goalless draw.

PSG and Dortmund did not renew hostilities again until nine years later. Tuchel's PSG side got the better of the German side to go all the way to the final of that season's Champions League competition but were forced to settle for the runners-up position as Bayern Munich proved to be too strong to beat in the final. That painful final loss might be playing in the minds of the PSG players tonight as they go in search of revenge tonight. Tonight's game promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of Europe's best and a stalemate result is the most probable outcome.
