European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Manchester United boast nine European crowns between them and the two last met in a competitive fixture nine years ago where the Bundesliga side emerged winners with a 3-1 scoreline in the second leg fixture of the Champions League quarter-finals. They last faced each other in the group stages back in the year 2001. Bayern Munich were on a 100% winning rate in the Bundesliga after winning their opening three games before their run was brought to an end with a stalemate against Bayer Leverkusen this past Friday. Harry Kane's goal was canceled out by Alex Gimraldo's strike to settle the first-half scores. Leon Goretzka then netted in what was thought to be the winner for Bayern Munich but Exequiel Palacios converted a penalty kick in the fourth minute of extra time to ensure that the fixture ended in a draw.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel will be serving a touchline suspension tonight in their Champions League opener against Manchester United, a team that the German tutor has never beaten on home soil as a manager in his past four previous attempts. The Bundesliga title holders, however, have never lost at home to the Red Devils winning three of the meetings with two of them ending in a stalemate. Tuchel's men will also be confident of progressing to the Champions League knockout rounds for the 16th successive year considering the fact that they have been touted as the favorites to top Group A with the other members of the group being Galatasaray and Copenhagen other than United. The German powerhouse have established themselves as UCL group stage experts over the years as they boast a remarkable 34-game unbeaten run at this stage. This is the longest such run in the history of Europe's elite club competition. Bayern Munich will also be looking to secure a 14th successive group-stage home win tonight.
