sokapro-UEFA Champions League: Arsenal vs PSV

The Gunners will be looking to have a perfect start for the UEFA Champions League tonight when they face off with PSV especially after missing out on the party for a whole seven years.

Arsenal will be welcoming PSV at the Emirates Stadium as they step out for the UEFA Champions League anthem for the first time in close to seven years after perpetually missing out on the competition in the recent past. Mikel Arteta's side booked their ticket into Europe's elite competition thanks to a second-place finish that they secured last season in the Premier League. They would have been crowned champions were it not for the last-minute slip that their opponents Manchester City capitalized on. The last time that the bright lights of the Champions League shone at the Emirates Stadium was when Arsene Wenger was still the man in charge of Arsenal. Wenger's side were, however, eliminated in a humiliating manner following a 10-2 aggregate score in which they had suffered two 5-1 defeats at the hands of Bayern Munich.

What followed after the embarrassing 10-2 defeat was a Wenger belated departure and the ill-fated Unai Emery era. Arsenal, however, will finally dine at Europe's top table once again in the coming weeks as they are due to face Sevilla and Lens after their duel with PSV tonight. It is worth noting that Arsenal with all their glory and stature are yet to win a Champions League trophy and will be hoping to make it a good run this season as they are arguably at their best in terms of squad. They will be vying for the top spot of Group B together with UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla. The Gunners get into tonight's game at the back of a 1-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League this past weekend.

Since the inaugural summit of Europe's elite competition 35 years ago, a semi-final exit in 2005 has represented PSV's deepest run so far. They come to tonight's game after beating NEC 4-0 in the Netherlands Eredivisie cementing their place at the top of the table in the process. Their unbeaten run now stands at a staggering 26 competitive matches and they will be aiming to stretch the run tonight when they face off with Premier League giants Arsenal. The Netherlands powerhouse beat Arsenal with an aggregate of 2-1 in the last 16 of the 2006-07 Champions League campaign. It is worth noting, however, that they have only ever scored once on Arsenal soil and will need to harness all their goal-scoring prowess if they wish to prevail against a deadly Arsenal side tonight. The most probable outcome of the match is a win for the Gunners but football might be full of surprises and PSV might just decide to pull one tonight.
